NALO 2025 for KS3 Commences

Today marks the commencement of the first-ever National Assessment of Learning Outcomes (NALO) for Key Stage 3 students across the Maldives. Conducted nationwide since 2008, NALO has previously assessed students at the end of Key Stages 1 and 2. This year, for the first time, students who have completed Key Stage 3 — Grades 7 and 8 — are sitting for the national assessment.

The assessment is being held in two rounds. Round 1, which begins today and continues over three days, covers English Language, Mathematics, and Science. Round 2, scheduled for September 2 and 3, will assess Islamic Studies and Dhivehi Language. Notably, this is the first time Islamic Studies is being included in NALO and the first time students' writing skills in Dhivehi Language are being assessed.

More than 5,100 students from 201 schools across the country are participating in this historic assessment. In many schools, all Grade 9 students are taking part, while in larger, more populated schools, selected samples of students are participating.

The Quality Assurance Department is overseeing the implementation of this assessment, aiming to provide a comprehensive overview of student learning outcomes at the end of Key Stage 3. Officials highlight that expanding the scope of NALO will offer valuable insights into the education system and support ongoing efforts to enhance teaching and learning nationwide.

The launch of NALO for Key Stage 3 marks a significant milestone in the Maldives’ commitment to strengthening education quality and ensuring that all students are equipped with the necessary skills and knowledge to succeed.
